Captain’s Day 2024

The sun shone on the Members who took part in the Captain’s Day golf competition. With tees times from 0700-1500, 49 teams on the Church and 8 teams on the Holywell, all playing a four ball, 2 or 3 scores to count stableford, saw 230 Members heading out on the beautifully prepared links.

Homemade Limoncello may have hindered a few shots off the first whilst a sugar rush of Barnecutts donuts, British cherries and a drink may have helped the ball fly just that little bit further down the 10th or 11th dependent on which course was being played.

Congratulations to Church winners: Meg Godfrey, Trudy Tremain, Bobby Godfrey and Harry Jolliff (106) and to Holywell winners: Peter & Jane Bendall and David & Beth Elliott (105), and of course to all those who found themselves in the prizes. Full results are on the website and if your team got a 2 please pick up your balls from reception.

Well done to those who found some of the balls I’d thrown into the rough and claimed their free drink. I’ll keep throwing “free drink” balls out there until April 2025 so don’t despair, if you hit a shot into the rough in the next few months there may be one lurking nearby. Thank you to all those who generously brought Mulligans, you ended up raising £980 for MIND Cornwall.

The BBQ and party in the evening, attended by approximately 150 people, meant the clubhouse, decorated beautifully by Kim Lord, was heaving with much laugher and chatter resonating whilst drinks flowed from the bar. After a lovely BBQ prepared by Dave and the team, The Retrobates began singing and the dance floor was soon awash with dancers of all abilities beaming with smiles.

Thank you to everyone involved in making it such a wonderful day – to all the greenkeepers and helpers on the courses and in the clubhouse, the kitchen and bar staff, golf desk and office, and of course to all you very supportive Members who came along. Without all of you it would have been just another July Saturday, instead it is a day I will cherish forever.
