Match & Competition

St Enodoc advance to the CTC Final!!

Sunday 4th February saw our CTC side face Tehidy Park Golf Club for a place in the final.

The morning foursomes started with a 2&1 win for Justin Barnard and Rob Macgregor over Louis Archer and Lewis Bradley. St Enodoc would respond however winning the next 3 foursomes matches, with Charlie Runnalls and George Tunbridge winning 5&4 over Chris Hoyle and Lee Chambers, shortly followed by a 5&3 win for Mike Masters and Joe Combellack over Adam Nottman and James Levick. Steve Chapman and Mark Justice would battle back from being 2 down on the 16th tee to win the game 1up against Richard Simmons and James Barnard. Our ninth man Steve Buse won his match 5&4 against Arron Wallace to finish off a great morning session for St Enodoc taking a 3.75 – 1 lead going into the afternoon singles.

Three points were required for St Enodoc in the afternoon however, it was Tehidy who drew first blood with a 3&2 win for Rob Macgregor over Lewis Bradley in match 1. In match 2 a birdie finish was required from Justin Barnard to halve his match with Louis Archer. In match 4 Joe Combellack would get St Enodoc off the mark with an impressive 7&6 win over Adam Nottma. Tehidy then added two more points with Richard Simmons defeating Steve Chapman 2&1 in match 3, followed by a 3&2 win for Lee Chambers over Charlie Runnalls in match 5. Chris Hoyle narrowly beat Mike Masters 2&1 in match 6, meaning 1.5 points were required from the remaining two games. In match 8 George Tunbridge would follow his morning win with a second 5&4 victory of the day, playing against James Barnard. Match 7 was still alive with Mark Justice needing to halve the match for St Enodoc to progress to the the Final. Mark would duly deliver making a brilliant Par on the tricky 17th hole at Trevose and therefore beating James Levick 2&1, securing our place in the Final and a result of St Enodoc 7.25 – 5.5 Tehidy Park.

We would like to thank Tehidy for the great game, Trevose for hosting us, and to all the spectators who came out and supported us on the day.

The final will be played on Sunday 17th March vs West Cornwall at Bude & North Cornwall Golf Club.

Final of the Tudor Edwards was played on the 21st January in gale force winds , the joy of winter golf !Kristian and Bobby Godfrey playing against Martin Biddle and Richard Hawken, the Godfrey’s receiving 2 strokes. The first 9 holes were a little scrappy in difficult conditions with Martin and Richard one ahead at the turn .The Godfrey’s made a nett 4 on the 10th match all square. The next two holes were exchanged with winning pars all square on the 13th tee.All the remaining holes playing into 40-45 mph wind, Martin and Richard made 4 pars in the next 5 holes which enabled them to win the match 2/1.

Hole In One!

Huge congratulations to Dave MacMillan who had a hole in one on the 5th (7 iron, two hops and in) whilst playing in the Senior Stableford competition on Monday 11th December. It galvanised his game and he came in the winner with 42 points! David was presented by senior captain ‘Neal Jolly’ with a certificate and a hole in one flag before the farmers Christmas party.

Presidents Trophy – 2nd Round

Presidents Trophy – 2nd Round

Match played at West Cornwall GC on Sunday 3rd December

Four weeks after their success in their 1st Round round match, it was a very confident President’s Trophy team of Quinn Bateman, Neil Bradley, Dennis Brown, Kai Dingle, Keith Hawke, Phil Hoare, Dave Hollyoak, Neil Robinson and Mike Smith who arrived at West Cornwall GC to play what proved to be a very strong side from Falmouth in one of the Quarter Final matches of this seasons competition.

Whilst the rain stayed away for most the of the match, the wind continued to grow in strength throughout the day which made playing conditions challenging at times. However, with Falmouth taking the early lead in the majority of games, and some of the St Enodoc team struggling to find the line and pace of the greens, it was clear that it was going to be a very difficult match.

Despite a lot of good golf being played by the St Enodoc team at times and a great performance from Quinn Bateman who won his game 5 & 4, unfortunately however Quinn proved to be the only winner for St Enodoc with the team eventually losing the match 8 – 1 overall. The match was both extremely competitive and very exciting to watch, it was played in great spirit – a credit to both teams.

A big thanks to the players, caddies and supporters for their commitment & support during this seasons competition, it is very much appreciated.

Turkey Trot 2023

Waking up to a hard frost made the first three hours of the morning slightly stressful. Taking the 3rd and 6th holes out of play to protect the two greens and delaying the start until 1045 meant the 140+ players were able to go out and play both courses in the Turkey Trot.

A unique format of foursomes betterball off the yellow, red and tinsel tees with two teams per tee might have had the players questioning my sanity but it seemed to work and the pace of play was faster than expected.

Thanks to Andy Golding who kindly accompanied me in the buggy laden with sausage rolls, mulled wine and coffee. A welcome warmer for the cold players.

Back inside for chatter, lunch and some light entertainment by David Barnes and his brass band made the whole day thoroughly enjoyable and the clubhouse rather full! Thank you to all the fantastic staff both on and off the course for enabling us to have such a wonderful day.

Congratulations to the winners:

CTC Match Report: St Enodoc v Newquay – Sunday 19th November 2023

CTC Match Report: St Enodoc v Newquay – Sunday 19th November 2023

Sunday the 19th of November saw our CTC team head to Trevose for a rematch of last year’s Quarter Final against a strong Newquay side, where St Enodoc were looking for redemption for last year’s loss. The players were met with high winds (40mph +) but luckily the rain stayed away for the entire day.

The first foursome out, Mark Justice and Lewis Bradley, would get the first point for St Enodoc with a 3&1 win over Tom Savage and Adam Herman. Our second pair, Mike Masters and Joe Combellack, found themselves against the father and son pairing of Dion and Dan Keyser, with the Newquay pairing edging the win on the 18th green. Next out saw George Tunbridge and Charlie Runnalls face the strong pairing of Joe Ibbs-George and Jon Hancock, where the St Enodoc pairing would get an all-important half point. Last out saw Louis Archer and Brandon Armitage take on county legend Ian Veale and young Tommy Miller with the St Enodoc pairing coming out victors 3&2. Due to illness, St Enodoc fielded possibly the most decorated ninth man in the competition’s history with Steve Chapman delivering what would later become a massive 3&2 victory over Heath Coombes.

The result was 3.25 – 1.5 in favour of St Enodoc after the morning session. St Enodoc required 3.5 points from the afternoon singles to win the match.

With the wind growing stronger in the afternoon, Newquay got off to a fast start with wins in Match 2 and 3 for Dan Keyser and Jon Hancock against Mark Justice and Mike Masters. St Enodoc responded with 4&3 wins from Joe Combellack, who even in the adverse weather conditions was still able to be under par for the round against Dion Keyser. Brandon Armitage defeated Tommy Miller in Match 5. Brandon delayed his plans to travel in order to play in the CTC, and validated his decision with a 100% record on the day.

This left St Enodoc needing 1.5 points from the last four games, however the odds were against us as Newquay were leading 3 of the 4 matches. In the first match out, Lewis Bradley courageously battled back to win the point for St Enodoc 1up against Jo Ibbs-George. Newquay countered St Enodoc’s strike with a blow of their own as Ian Veale defeated Louis Archer.  In match 7, Adam Herman beat Charlie Runnalls 4&3. This resulted in St Enodoc needing a half point to win the match overall.

George Tunbridge was all square after 14 holes and found himself in a very similar to position to our last game against Perranporth! A routine par on the 15th and 2 great shots on the 16th meant George had a 5-footer for par to win the hole and go dormy 2 up. The celebrations started as George knocked in his putt to claim the half point which would see St Enodoc win on ninth man 6.75 to 6.

We would like to thank all the caddies and supporters who came out in cold and windy conditions to support the team. The next round will be on Sunday 4th February 2024.

Night Golf – Friday 17th November

Cornwall+ v ROW

In the end the weather was kinder than forecasted to the 40 players that made up the two teams playing in this years annual Cornwall+ vs ROW match.

Although the rain stayed away the wind was gusting at over 35mph and playing conditions were still challenging.

In the lead match the Cornish team got off to a great start with a 10 point to 8 victory. At the half way stage Cornwall had won two matches, ROW had won two and one match was halved.  The overall match score couldn’t have been closer with scoring level at 45 – 45.  The next 4 matches saw 2 victories a piece but now ROW were leading by 3 points 82.5 to 79.5 with only the final match to come in. Incredibly the Cornish duo of Mike and Nigel Buse beat the ROW pairing of Julian Darnell and Mark Pimble by the required 3 points to secure a 90 – 90 point draw.

The match was played in excellent spirit with much hilarity and witty banter exchanged between the teams during the after-match meal and continued in the bar into the evening.

Thank you to all of those that took part for keeping this great tradition alive.  Thank you too David and Heather and their teams for providing an excellent meal and great service as always.

Victory: President’s Trophy Round 1!

Victory: President’s Trophy Round 1

Match played at Bude GC on Sunday 29th October

Just three weeks after there success in their preliminary round match, the President’s Trophy team of Quinn Bateman, Neil Bradley, Dave Collick, Kai Dingle, Keith Hawke, Phil Hoare, Dave Hollyoak,
Neil Robinson and Mike Smith arrived at Bude GC to play a strong and confident side from China Fleet in the 1st Round proper of this seasons competition.

Although St Enodoc had a couple of early wins from Keith Hawke and Mike Smith it was clear that the China Fleet team were definitely up for the fight with the rest of the games being extremely tight, and with the lead in many of the other games frequently swapping first one way then the other, unsurprisingly 6 of the remaining games were not resolved until either the 17th or 18th. However, I am delighted to report that the St Enodoc team proved to be the stronger side on the day eventually winning the match 7.5 – 1.5.

Thankfully, although the wind grew in strength throughout the day, the rain stayed away for most the of the match, which made for ideal playing conditions. The match was both extremely competitive and very exciting to watch, it was played in great spirit – a credit to both teams.

The team can now look forward to playing Falmouth GC in the second round at the beginning of December.

Result: Frank Wills Round 1

Frank Wills Salver 1st Round Match played at Trevose v West Cornwall GC on Sunday 22nd October 2023.

On a brisk early morning at Trevose & for most of the morning the sun was shining with just a couple heavy squally showers & a light breeze. It proved to be a tight match with the teams very evenly matched . Unfortunately for St.Enodoc it came down to the last match which we lost on the 18th hole. Giving 3-4 shots in every match was in my view very difficult to overcome. Overall result 3-2 to West Cornwall.

The match was both extremely competitive and exciting to watch, it was played in great spirit – a credit to both teams. I’d like to thank our team for putting themselves forward for selection & thank the caddies (Kevin Richards & Matthew Warren) and the 4-5 members who came along to support.

CTC 1st Round – A win by the narrowest of margins

St Enodoc win by the finest of margins.

Sunday 15th October saw the CTC team travel to a well-presented St Austell Golf Club to face defending champions Perranporth in the 1st Rd of this winters Cornwall Team Championship.

St Enodoc vs Perranporth was always going to be tight, and this was proven in the morning foursomes with every match finishing on the 18th.  First out saw Archer and Bradley in a close match with Perranporth stalwarts Wilson and Kirton ending with a halved match. This was followed by the St Enodoc stalwarts of Chapman and Jolliff in a close battle against Tom Benney & James Ruddick with the Perranporth duo closing out the match 2up. Mike Masters and Joe Combellack were never down in their match vs Marc Wilson and George Law winning 1up. Making their CTC debuts Brandon Armitage & George Tunbridge found themselves 4 down at one point to Simon Knowles and Dean Tulley battling to the 18th they would come up just short finishing 2 down. Ninth man Simon Lord found himself against tough opposition in Tristan Gurd with the latter winning 5&4.

This left the score 1.5 – 3.25 in favour of Perranporth, with St Enodoc needing five of the available eight singles points to take the match. Needing a fast start St Enodoc would win the first three matches with a 4&3 win for Louis Archer over Wilson. Quickly followed by a 3&2 win for Steve Chapman over Sandy Kirton and a 4&3 win for Lewis Bradley over Tom Benney. Perranporth fought back with wins from James Ruddick and Dean Tulley against Mike Masters and Ian Jolliff. This was followed by Joe Combellack in a close game which George Law edged on the 18th. Needing the last two games for the match our two debutants delivered with Brandon Armitage closing out his match 2&1 vs Knowles. George Tunbridge playing some great golf found himself 2 up, keeping all in attendance on the edge of their seats slotted away the tough 4-footer on 17 to win the match for St Enodoc.

Louis Archer beat Connor Wilson 4&3

Steve Chapman beat Sandy Kirton 3&2

Lewis Bradley beat Tom Benney 4&3

Mike Masters lost to James Ruddick – 6&5

Trip Down Memory Lane!

Here’s some history for you, 2008 was the last time St Enodoc Juniors won this and the time before that was 1989, 1994 and 1995.

Who would’ve thought that the parents, above Kristian Godfrey and Steve Chapman who have won this before would now be supporting their children and watching them win and a father and Grandad, Keith Godfrey, has also been involved with the Bolitho Shield a “few” years ago. What great Memories for everyone.

Bradley & Beare placed 2nd in the Lord Lieutenants Trophy

Drama at the CGU Lord Lieutenants Trophy held at Carlyon Bay GC yesterday. Lewis Bradley and Jamie Beare were the last pair to tee off and matched the leading score off their single figure handicaps. They however were left ruing the 17th hole where they could only manage a double bogey and with countback employed lost out by virtue of that one hole. Better luck next time Gentlemen !

County Champions honoured at a reception

L to R: Club Captain – Caroline Hume-Kendall, Club President – Martin Gargan, Cornwall Ladies Champion 2023 – Kira Barnes, Cornwall Closed Champion 2023 – Joe Cruse, Cornwall U-14 Boys Champion – Bobby Godfrey, Cornwall Mens Champion 2023 – Louis Archer, Club Chairman – Martin Trees.

On Thursday last the Club Captain hosted a reception at the Club to recognise a unique feat in the history of Cornish golf, that of having four County Champions simultaneously. In welcoming Members and guests the Club Captain said –

“The double of having a Ladies and Mens County Champion from the same club in the same year is rare, in fact in the last 25 years it’s only happened three times and never at St Enodoc. Congratulations to Kira Barnes and Louis Archer. It is also very gratifying to St Enodoc that Bobby Godfrey has won the U14 Championship. To my knowledge, a Cornish club has never held these titles together.

Joe Cruse has retained the Cornish Closed for the third consecutive year, that’s quite something Joe and an inspiration to many and congratulations to the U14 Nett Champion, Alfie Chapman, and the U12 Nett Champion Will Dingle. It’s been quite a year so far.

The health of any golf club is defined by the excellence of its best players and to have these recognised achievements demonstrates that St Enodoc is ready to take on any challenge, against anyone, anywhere, and for that we should be very proud.

Before we raise a glass I would also like to thank some of our past county champions for joining us this evening:

 Two times winner John Bradley

Two times winner Steve Chapman and of course

Two times winner Joe Cruse”

The Buse Shield is back and the weather could not have been better, Sunday 4th June.

The comment of the day had to be from Samuel who didn’t hesitate in telling his dad David, ‘If you hadn’t missed that putt, Dad, we’d have won!’

Well done to Neil and Oban Robinson, winning with 38 pts.

El sueño de Annodata está muerto … for the men in ’23

Ideal conditions … for spending a day at the beach … brought two teams to St Enodoc, both aspiring to continue the Annodata Challenge journey to the finals in Spain.

The challenge proved too much for St Enodoc and the ‘B’ team from Lanhydrock showed they know how to play links golf when the need arises, winning 3/2. Good luck to them in the next round.

Congratulations to the St Enodoc ladies who prevailed today. Keep winning!

Joe Cruse retains Cornish Closed Championship

With a 36 hole total of 3 over par Joe Cruse yesterday retained his Cornish Closed Championship at St Austell GC

Tamar Cup Success

St Enodoc Juniors had 2 teams playing in the Tamar Cup last weekend and both were victorious!

Kai, Jay, Henry and Quinn.

At St Mellion the team won 3-0 and, not to be out done, at Borrington St Enodoc also won 3-0.

Oban, Tom, Alfie and Bobby.

Bray Bowl 2023

Annie and Bob Cruse

Yesterday saw some of our Members compete for the Bray Bowl on the Church Course. These brave pairings dared to play one of the toughest formats in golf – a mixed foursomes medal! Their efforts were rewarded by a stunning day on the Links but those who were directionally challenged found themselves punished by some gnarly rough, just as it should be at this time of year. Runners up, on count back from John and Sharon Twiggs, were Jeff & Maria Buckley with a nett 75. Winners by 4 shots (nett 71) were the formidable Cruse team – congratulations Bob and Annie, thoroughly deserved.

Out on the Holywell, a kinder format of foursomes stableford was played and the pairings seemed to come in with bigger smiles. Winners were Tony & Di Mindel with 39 points, winning on count back from Frank & Lorna Harper.
