CTC Match Report: St Enodoc v Newquay – Sunday 19th November 2023
Sunday the 19th of November saw our CTC team head to Trevose for a rematch of last year’s Quarter Final against a strong Newquay side, where St Enodoc were looking for redemption for last year’s loss. The players were met with high winds (40mph +) but luckily the rain stayed away for the entire day.
The first foursome out, Mark Justice and Lewis Bradley, would get the first point for St Enodoc with a 3&1 win over Tom Savage and Adam Herman. Our second pair, Mike Masters and Joe Combellack, found themselves against the father and son pairing of Dion and Dan Keyser, with the Newquay pairing edging the win on the 18th green. Next out saw George Tunbridge and Charlie Runnalls face the strong pairing of Joe Ibbs-George and Jon Hancock, where the St Enodoc pairing would get an all-important half point. Last out saw Louis Archer and Brandon Armitage take on county legend Ian Veale and young Tommy Miller with the St Enodoc pairing coming out victors 3&2. Due to illness, St Enodoc fielded possibly the most decorated ninth man in the competition’s history with Steve Chapman delivering what would later become a massive 3&2 victory over Heath Coombes.
The result was 3.25 – 1.5 in favour of St Enodoc after the morning session. St Enodoc required 3.5 points from the afternoon singles to win the match.
With the wind growing stronger in the afternoon, Newquay got off to a fast start with wins in Match 2 and 3 for Dan Keyser and Jon Hancock against Mark Justice and Mike Masters. St Enodoc responded with 4&3 wins from Joe Combellack, who even in the adverse weather conditions was still able to be under par for the round against Dion Keyser. Brandon Armitage defeated Tommy Miller in Match 5. Brandon delayed his plans to travel in order to play in the CTC, and validated his decision with a 100% record on the day.
This left St Enodoc needing 1.5 points from the last four games, however the odds were against us as Newquay were leading 3 of the 4 matches. In the first match out, Lewis Bradley courageously battled back to win the point for St Enodoc 1up against Jo Ibbs-George. Newquay countered St Enodoc’s strike with a blow of their own as Ian Veale defeated Louis Archer. In match 7, Adam Herman beat Charlie Runnalls 4&3. This resulted in St Enodoc needing a half point to win the match overall.
George Tunbridge was all square after 14 holes and found himself in a very similar to position to our last game against Perranporth! A routine par on the 15th and 2 great shots on the 16th meant George had a 5-footer for par to win the hole and go dormy 2 up. The celebrations started as George knocked in his putt to claim the half point which would see St Enodoc win on ninth man 6.75 to 6.
We would like to thank all the caddies and supporters who came out in cold and windy conditions to support the team. The next round will be on Sunday 4th February 2024.

Postponement of Contractual Hollow Coring
We regret to inform you that the scheduled contractual hollow
coring operation, initially planned for the 13th November
2023, has been cancelled for the safety/well-being of all
involved and the protection of the golf courses. The decision to
cancel this impending operation was not taken lightly and has
been necessitated by the recent weather complications.
Considering the current and future weather conditions and
their potential impact to the courses, we have decided to
postpone the hollow coring to the 29th January 2024. This
postponement will provide us with the best opportunity to
benefit fully from the contractual assistance while ensuring
best practices for the golf courses. We are hopeful that the
weather will be more favourable during the rescheduled
period, allowing us to proceed with the operation smoothly
and efficiently.

Well done to Kai Dingle for winning the Godfrey Scratch Cup (79 gross) and to Tom Richards for winning the Nett Cup (62 nett) for the second year running.
The standard of golf played and the scores that came in were very impressive considering the greens are very trying at the moment!
Three juniors came in with a gross 79! Kai Dingle, Bobby Godfrey & Alfie Chapman.

Frank Wills Salver 1st Round Match played at Trevose v West Cornwall GC on Sunday 22nd October 2023.
On a brisk early morning at Trevose & for most of the morning the sun was shining with just a couple heavy squally showers & a light breeze. It proved to be a tight match with the teams very evenly matched . Unfortunately for St.Enodoc it came down to the last match which we lost on the 18th hole. Giving 3-4 shots in every match was in my view very difficult to overcome. Overall result 3-2 to West Cornwall.
The match was both extremely competitive and exciting to watch, it was played in great spirit – a credit to both teams. I’d like to thank our team for putting themselves forward for selection & thank the caddies (Kevin Richards & Matthew Warren) and the 4-5 members who came along to support.

The Red-billed Chough (Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax), once extinct in Cornwall and still rare throughout the UK, has been seen in recent months for the first time on the Church course. A group of up to eight birds seem to favour the area around the 9th green and 16th tee, so look out for glossy black crows (about the size of Jackdaws) with a bright red, curved bill and red legs. They search for larvae and grubs on the short turf and make a friendly ‘chee-ow’ call.
The Chough features prominently on the Cornish coat of arms and the legendary King Arthur was said to have turned into a Chough when he died, so familiar was the bird in Cornwall in the past. But they stopped breeding here in 1947, the last one being seen in 1973. They re-appeared of their own accord in 2001 and have bred in the far west, on the Lizard, and on the north coast around Newquay since then.
Conservation efforts by sympathetic farmers and local environmental organisations have ensured that the last 22 years have seen a resurgence in their numbers, and in 2023 they had their most successful breeding year yet with 39 pairs raising 112 young. Clearly these new birds have spread along the coast and it is likely some of these are the ones now gracing our fairways. CAW CORNISH BOWL – SUNDAY 8TH OCTOBER
St Enodoc played against St Austell at Treloy G.C. in the Cornish Bowl. The weather was kind to us and the course was presented very well. This match was always going to be very closely contested which proved to be the case. St Enodoc gained the first point when Alfie Chapman and Bobby Godfrey won their game 3&2. Oban Robinson and John Twiggs had a close game which they took to the 18th hole but unfortunately lost. Lee Griffin and Stuart Parkyn fought hard but sadly lost 2&1. Paul Honey and Nigel Godfrey were always under pressure with the lead changing hands frequently. However, they eventually succumbed 3&2. Matt Hamley and Nick Williams took their game to the 18th but lost to a good par. The final result was a 4-1 loss. Needless to say I was extremely proud of the team’s performance especially the three selected juniors, Alfie, Bobby and Oban who were playing in their first adult county competition.

After a busy year on both courses the time has quickly come around again to Hollow Core the greens on both courses. A necessary but invasive aeration technique.

This coming week on the courses. Fortunately, the weather has been on our side lately, and it looks like it’s continuing to cooperate. Given this fortunate weather, we see an excellent opportunity to proceed with verti-cutting the greens and surrounds. Additionally, we intend to make significant progress in our rough maintenance program during this favourable weather window.

St Enodoc’s Juniors Win the Bolitho Shield, after 36 holes, knocking out Perranporth in the morning and Radnor in the afternoon at Merlin Golf Club.
What a day, what a great fight these boys put on and what a putt. It’s been a long time coming!

Trip Down Memory Lane!
Here’s some history for you, 2008 was the last time St Enodoc Juniors won this and the time before that was 1989, 1994 and 1995.
Who would’ve thought that the parents, above Kristian Godfrey and Steve Chapman who have won this before would now be supporting their children and watching them win and a father and Grandad, Keith Godfrey, has also been involved with the Bolitho Shield a “few” years ago. What great Memories for everyone.

Autumn Mixed Open – Sunday 10th September 2023
Yesterday we hosted our Autumn Mixed Open and welcomed 100 visiting players to St Enodoc.
We received lots of positive feedback about the condition of the course and our homemade Cheesecake!

We have recently learned that Joe Cruse has accepted the position of Head Professional at Bowood Park Golf Club, as many of our members will know Joe has been at the St Enodoc for 21 years and has in that time become one of the most accomplished golfers in the Clubs history.
Joe will be at the Club for a few more months before starting his new role in March 2024.
We wish him every success in his new challenge.

A focused intervention will be undertaken on our greens to address the presence of rogue grass activity. This strategic effort is aimed at enhancing the overall quality and consistency of our greens. While this intervention is specific to the greens, we want to reassure that our commitment to maintaining the highest standards extends to all other playing surfaces and peripherals. We will continue implementing cultural maintenance practices that promote healthy grass cover and resilience throughout the facility.

With the weather finally settling, we have a perfect opportunity to enhance and increase speeds on the putting surfaces across both the Church Course and Holywell.
Our greenkeeping team will be hard at work to fine-tune the greens, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable golfing experience for all. We understand the importance of maintaining perfect playing conditions, and we are committed to achieving just that.
