After 3 impressive victories, St Enodoc were drawn at home to Ilfracombe in the last 64 of this prestigious national competition.
The weather was set fair with a mild westerly breeze. Both team selections were based on experience over youth with some interesting pairings. St Enodoc started briskly with Lee Bateman 2 up after 2 and Andy Beare flying out of the blocks to be 4 up after 6. Stuart Fleet and Dennis Brown were also in control of their games early on whilst Matt Fox having to concede some 13 shots was hanging in there.
Beare and Fleet were playing par golf through to the turn and their victories looked predictably assured which was indeed the case.
However this Ilfracombe team were a resilient bunch and hole by hole they started to gain control in the remaining matches. Fox was dormy 2 down and was left to soldier on alone as the local support concentrated on watching the final match which was a very close affair. Brown finally succumbed to some sensational Devonian golf on the 17th and things looked gloomy. In the distance though the orange cap of Fox could be seen waving in celebration as he stoically secured an unlikely looking half.
Extra time was now required. Brown won the toss and drove purposefully forward with a now vibrant gallery. It was not to be though, the Ilfracombe talisman was in fine form and pulled off a remarkable victory on the 19th hole.
The match was played in wonderful conditions and in great spirit, we wish Ilfracombe the very best in the remaining 32 and thank all this year’s St Enodoc players for their valiant efforts over the last few months.
